The Kristal Tower: when glassmaking tradition meets innovative safety solutions

With its crystal-inspired design, the Kristal Tower beautifully revives the tradition of glassmaking while incorporating modern architectural and technological solutions. Automatic sliding doors fit perfectly into the design, providing both esthetic appeal and functionality.

“Kristal Tower, standing at 106 meters as the tallest building in Slovenia, honors the glassmaking tradition and attracts numerous visitors, significantly contributing to Rogaška Slatina,” says Lidija Jančič (Rogaška Slatina Public Institute for Tourism and Culture).

Prioritizing fire safety and automatic access

Given its height, the tower places a strong focus on safety, especially fire protection. The ground floor, with a shop and information point, has a 500 F fire door.

Positioned behind the security speed lanes at the elevator entrance, the 500 F door operates as a regular automatic sliding door under normal circumstances. During a fire or power failure, it forcibly closes and stays closed, stopping the spread of fire and heat for up to 30 minutes (EI30 fire protection level). This feature is essential for maintaining fire safety.

“According to the fire safety plan, the passage with the fire door marks the division between two fire sectors,” explains Dr. Viktor Markelj from Ponting d.o.o., the project’s lead.

At Ponting, the team highlighted that only automatic sliding doors could fulfil all the architectural criteria.

Smart solution for complex architectural designs

In the tower’s narrow upper level, standard sliding doors 300 are installed at restroom entrances. These doors save space, don’t need extra space to open, and ensure smooth access, even with high visitor traffic. Motion sensors operate the men’s and women’s restroom doors, while restrooms for the disabled include an external light signal for occupancy. Inside, they have a Smart Lock switch and an emergency button.

Milky glass on the doors leaves ensures privacy, preventing direct views into the restrooms and maintaining a clear separation from other areas.

Success through teamwork and innovation

“Completing a complex project like this requires a skilled, interdisciplinary team covering architecture, construction, technology, mechanical and electrical installations, and fire safety,” says Dr. Markelj.

The Kristal Tower stands as a testament to combining tradition with innovation, setting new benchmarks in architecture and technology.
